Room Acoustics
Measurement and acoustic characterization of indoor spaces
Room acoustics focuses on how sound behaves within enclosed spaces.
It is essential for achieving optimal acoustic quality in environments such as offices, auditoriums, classrooms, studios, and public buildings.
Why room acoustics matter
Unlike building acoustics, which deals with sound transmission between spaces, room acoustics evaluates how sound is generated, distributed, and perceived within a single room. Proper room acoustic design ensures speech intelligibility, listening comfort, and appropriate sound levels for the intended use of the space.
What is evaluated in room acoustics?
Room acoustics measurements address how sound:
-
Propagates and reflects within a room
-
Decays over time after the source stops
-
Is perceived in terms of intelligibility and comfort
The objective is to quantify the acoustic characteristics of a space and assess whether it meets functional and regulatory requirements.
Measurement accuracy and standard compliance
Reliable room acoustics measurements require Class 1 instrumentation compliant with IEC 61672. Frequency analysis in octave and one-third octave bands must comply with IEC 61260.
Reverberation time measurements are typically performed according to ISO 3382, while speech intelligibility is evaluated in accordance with IEC 60268-16 (STI). Specific applications, such as open-plan offices, can be assessed according to ISO 3382-3.
Main measurement categories
Room acoustics measurements typically include:
Reverberation time (RT)
Evaluation of the sound decay time in a room after the sound source has stopped, used to analyze how sound behaves in space and time, and to assess its adequacy with respect to the acoustic requirements of the room. Read more...
Speech intelligibility
Evaluation of speech transmission within a space, used to analyze how the speech signal propagates and is perceived, and to assess its adequacy with respect to intelligibility requirements, typically using the Speech Transmission Index (STI) and measurement methods such as STIPA. Read more...
