Airflow tesistance and acoustic performance
Airflow resistance is one of the key parameters for characterising porous materials and is closely linked to their acoustic performance. Low airflow resistance indicates that air passes easily through the material, while high airflow resistance means the structure is closer to airtight.
Standards-compliant measurement in sccordance with ISO 9053‑2
Nor1517A determines the specific airflow resistance – and related quantities – using the alternating airflow method in accordance with ISO 9053‑2:2020 “Acoustics – Determination of airflow resistance – Part 2: Alternating airflow method”.
Dynamic measurement principle
The system is based on a dynamic principle. An AC motor–driven piston generates an oscillating movement that produces a 2 Hz alternating airflow into a cylindrical tank and through the test specimen. The resulting pressure modulation inside the cylinder is measured by a condenser microphone and analysed with a sound analyser using the 2 Hz 1/3‑octave band on the Nor140 sound level meter.
Direct calculation and traceable documentation
Specific airflow resistivity is then calculated either in an Excel template or read directly from the meter in Pa·s/m. Measurement results can be stored in the instrument memory for traceable documentation and later analysis.
