Sound Power
/in Sound power/by Torunn Lahn-JohannessenSound Power
Sound power describes how much acoustic energy a source emits per unit of time and is measured in watts (W). To make it easier to compare sources, the sound power level is often used – a logarithmic value that highlights the differences between products.
What is special about sound power is that it is independent of the surroundings. EU Directive 2000/14/EC requires that many noise-generating products (e.g. washing machines, power tools, and construction machinery) sold within the EU must carry a specific noise label. This labeling makes it easy for users and customers to compare noise levels between machines and equipment.
Sound power also plays an important role in the planning and design of industrial buildings and production environments. It can be determined either by measuring the sound pressure around the object (ISO 374X or 546) or by using sound intensity measurements (ISO 9614).
Sound power provides a neutral and reliable measure of how much sound a source actually emits.
